What do I need to see the doctors at the clinic?
To attract a medicare rebate for the consultation, you will need a referral except for an appointment with Dr Marnie Rowan, GP Lactation consultant. A referral from a GP is valid for 12 months and a referral from a specialist is valid for three months. We aim to review all referrals in three days, but sometimes if the referral is complex or we need the input of a specific clinician, this process can take up to 10 days.
If the referral is based on challenges with parenting or the behaviour of children, a referral for both parents and the child is necessary. Most of the time, the work is done with the parents, to help them support their child with their emotional and behavioural issues.
Psychology appointments can be claimed through your private health provider should you not have a referral. Please advise reception you will be claiming through Private Health.
I have a referral , when can I make an appointment?
Please have your referrer email or fax the referral. If you have a copy, you can email it to us at enquiries@elizabethclinic.com.au Simply take a photo and attach to an email if you do not have a scanner or fax.
Once we receive your referral, it will be reviewed by our clinicians. We will then contact you to offer an appointment. This can take up to 10 working days. On occasion our clinicians may require further information and this allows the time to liaise with the referrer or yourself before an appointment can be offered.
If we are unable to contact you despite leaving several messages, we will take that as a sign that you no longer need the appointment and take your name from our appointment list. Should you change your mind, please contact us promptly and we will check the validity of your referral before we can make an appointment.
Help! I need a script
If you find yourself out of medication and require a script, please be aware our clinicians are not in clinic every day and may take up to 7 days to do a script.
Please email us with your request for a script, detailing the name of the medication, dosage and which doctor you see.Your doctor may request you make an appointment and/or may charge a $20-$40 fee
I have a Mental Health Care Plan , why do I have to pay for sessions?
As a private billing service, we are not able to bulk bill appointments. Having a referral and a MHCP allows you to receive a medicare rebate. Many families meet the Medicare Safety Net, which allows up to 80% of the gap to be refunded by medicare.
What changes with Medicare and information management as my child grows older?
Do consider reading the WA Health Consent to Treatment document which contains all relevant information. We have added some key points below:
When your child turns 14
- Your child can get their own Medicare statements.
- Neither you or your child will have access to their Medicare claims history online. You can request it using the ‘Request for Medicare claims’ information form via myGov.
- You will no longer have access to their immunisation history statement. Your child can access these via their Medicare online account (part of myGov). They can also use the Express Plus Medicare mobile app.
When your child turns 15
- Your child can get their own Medicare card.
- Having a Medicare card gives them access to a range of medical services and prescriptions at a lower cost. They’ll also get free care as a patient in a public hospital.
- Your child can choose to either transfer to their own card (they’ll no longer be on your card) OR stay on your card and copy to a new card (they’ll stay active on your card and get their own card).
Please visit the WA Government Website Teenage Years page for further information about changes relating to specific child ages.
What is a developmental assessment?
A developmental assessment will usually be carried out over two appointments. For children under the age of five years, a formal developmental assessment (Griffiths III) may be required. This will identify any areas of delay, along with developmental strengths. Each assessment appointment will normally take one hour. A review appointment may also be required to discuss results of any tests or specialised assessments (eg cognitive assessments, learning assessments, specific questionnaires for home and school ). Review appointments are usually between 30 mins to one hour.
Please bring any previous assessment reports or investigation results to your appointment. These may include; hearing or vision testing, teacher reports or school psychology reports, previous reports from other Paediatricians, allied health (occupational therapy, speech therapy, psychology) reports.
What is an autism assessment?
Autism assessments involve at least two assessment appointments followed by referral to and consultation with Speech Pathology/Clinical Psychology assessors about the assessment and possible diagnosis. If a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder is made, a follow up appointment is required to discuss the assessment and plan management.
Please bring any previous assessment reports or investigation results to your appointment. These may include; hearing or vision testing, teacher reports or school psychology reports, previous reports from other Paediatricians, allied health (occupational therapy, speech therapy, psychology) reports.
Do all your specialists use the same forms?
All of our specialists work towards the same goal: excellent quality of life for their patients. However they have different clinical backgrounds and approaches, and as such, will occasionally use different types of forms to gather the information they need to ensure accurate and best-practice treatment.
How often do I need to see the paediatrician if my child is prescribed stimulant medication?
Children and adolescents taking medication will need to be reviewed at least every six months, with more frequent review at the commencement of medication. If stimulant medications are trialled, a review six weeks post trial is need to assess response and need for ongoing medication.
What happens in a psychiatric consultation?
The initial assessments take 60-90 minutes and require a referral from your GP or a specialist. The assessment is an opportunity to tell someone what has been going on for you. The assessment will often also incorporate some details about your past and your family too. There is no pressure to talk about anything that is too uncomfortable, and there is always an opportunity to ask any questions.
By the end of the consultation, the psychiatrist will provide you and your referrer with an individualised care plan, which has been negotiated with you. They will also involve other family members if that is helpful and acceptable to you. Some patients may continue to work closely with the psychiatrist, be referred to other clinic services or appropriate care in the community.
What happens in an appointment with a psychologist?
A psychological consultation usually takes 50-60 minutes and can offer a substantial rebate under a Mental Health Care Plan. Private health funds may also cover some of the fee. Counselling is also sometimes covered by the private health funds.
The psychologist/counsellor will work with you to create an understanding of the issues that currently concern you and to work out a plan that is suited to you and your family.
After a fixed number of sessions, the psychologist/counsellor will review your progress and renegotiate what you may need. They will always keep your referrer and GP informed of your progress.
My doctor asked me to get an apt before the referral is done, can I book now?
We require a referral prior to booking with Elizabeth Clinic specialists. In some instances, you may not need a GP referral for psychotherapy and psychology. If you’re unsure what is required, give our friendly reception team a call on (08) 9384 4565.
Where is my referral at in the triage process?
Each discipline has its own wait list, with triage and allocation varying depending upon the demand of the services and the availability for clinicians. Recently, there has been significant state-wide demand upon paediatrics leading to extended wait times. In most cases our reception team will be able to give you an estimated wait-time.
What age range of clients do you see, and what services are available to these age ranges?
We provide psychiatric and paediatric support for 0-18, and a full range of adult psychology, psychiatry and therapies.
I need an urgent appointment with my specialist.
We are unable to offer last-minute and urgent appointments in most cases, due to wait-lists and clinician availability. Our team may be able to place you on a cancellation list. Should you require urgent medical support, consider presenting to your local Emergency Department. Should you require less urgent but timely support, consider making an appointment with your GP.
I am seeking a second paediatric opinion for my child.
Due to the significant paediatric demand, we do not currently offer second paediatric opinions. Our current goal is to provide support for as many families and children who have not yet had access to assessment.
The doctor I see said they would write up a report/email- I haven't received anything and I need it ASAP
We endeavour to ensure a timely response for patient requests; however, this is not always possible as many of our specialists are on-call in hospitals for the majority of their week. We will always inform them of your needs and attempt to expedite the process where possible.
My child's school wants a letter from my specialist, can they write me one?
Specialists are usually able to provide a letter, though they may not always be able to provide specifically what the school requests. In some instances, paediatricians and psychiatrics may be able to release different information and directions for schools.
I haven't received a Medicare rebate for this appointment yet, what do I do?
All transactions are submitted to Medicare on the same day as payment. Our recommendation is to call Medicare (132 011), cite the appointment date, time and fee charged, and request they investigate.
Psychology
What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?
Psychology falls under the field of allied health while psychiatry is a medical discipline. Psychologists focus on providing psychotherapy whilst psychiatrists diagnose illness and manage treatment for a range of both complex and serious mental health issues.

No you do not need a referral to see one of our psychologists. We do recommend you seek a referral and a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, which will allow Medicare to rebate part of your session fees for a number of sessions each year.
Please note: Autism assessments conducted by a psychologist will require a referral from a paediatrician.

How long do scripts last for?
Paediatric repeated scripts last for 6 months before they expire. All appointments need to be paid for before scripts are sent to your preferred pharmacy. If your script hasn’t expired, you will need to pick up the last repeat before a paediatrician can write a new one.
Do I need to make a booking to have a new script written?
Yes. Our paediatricians will need to assess your child during a booked appointment before writing a new script. Due to how in demand our paediatric services are last minute appointments for late scripts are not always available.
Are the paediatricians accepting new patients at the moment?
Our paediatricians’ books are currently closed at the moment. While we are currently not booking in any new clients, nor are we adding to our waiting lists. Please check the website regularly for updates.
What do I need to bring with me to the paediatric appointment?
Clients will need to provide the appropriate forms for the paediatricians to complete. These forms can be found online through Centrelink for clients who are registered. Please ensure you bring the right forms as there are a number of form options. For more information, please get in touch with Centrelink and/or your GP.
Do I need to make a booking to have a form filled?
If you just need a new form completed, you do not need to book an appointment with one of our paediatricians. Please note that forms completed outside of an appointment will incur a cost of $40.
Autism Assessments
How do I get a referral for an autism assessment?
Autism assessment referrals are received from paediatricians. Once you have received a referral from your GP to see a paediatrician and attend your appointment, the paediatrician will assess your child and, if deemed necessary, refer you to Elizabeth Clinic practitioners who specialise in autism assessment.
Why do I need to see a paediatrician, psychologist and speech pathologist?
In Western Australia a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder needs to be signed off by a paediatrician, psychologist and speech pathologist. The Elizabeth Clinic provides psychology and paediatric support on-site.
Do you offer autism assessments via telehealth?
Autism assessments are not conducted over telehealth. If you would like to have your child assessed for autism and have received a referral from a paediatrician but cannot attend an appointment, please give our team a call.
